portrait, copy after an engraving by Gilbert Stuart. Adult male subject in military dress, bust-length view, facing left three-quarter turn with eyes facing forward. Subject has grey hair tied in back with a black ribbon, a "fleshy face and double chin" (Park 1:472) and wears a black military coat with ochre yellow lapels and turned-down collar, two rows of brass buttons, gold epaulettes, white neckcloth and frill. The background is shaded from a reddish brown at the bottom left of the painting, to blue, to brown at the top.

portrait. He is shown bust, slightly to the right, with his brown eyes turned to the spectator. He wears a gray coat and waistcoat, a white neckcloth and soft pleated shirt. His head leans on his left hand, his left elbow resting on the table covered with a red cloth, on which are three books, one of them opened, bound in calf. The sleeve of the shirt is shown at the wrist, pleated into a narrow wrist-band. His dark brown hair is worn long with a curl on the right shoulder. His complexion is ruddy. Subject has brown and grey hair, mostly bald and a full grey beard, dark blue eyes and wears a red and ochre striped bathrobe tied at the waist, white vest and cravat. He stands next to a table on which he has painted a piece of paper which reads: "...when you have nothing to do, paint your own portrait. Yours sincerely, T. Sully...." Interior setting with the back of two paintings stacked against the back wall near elbow of subject, easel visible above. View through window of tower and reflection in water, cloudy red and blue sky shading to dark brown at top of painting.
